Sample Chapter For THELMA'S EATERY by RaeLynn Blue

Unwrapping himself from his weather gear, Jose performed a slow, steady strip tease. He unzipped a black rain slicker, and slowly removed his arms from the sleeves. Second, he lifted off the boxy brown hat, and eased it down to the floor. Finally, he pulled off the gloves; finger by finger, then removed the entire glove. He repeated the actions with the other hand.

“Girl, you’ve got to see this!” Rae whispered excitedly. Her wide mouth was spread into an open grin. Wolfishly, she licked her lips and pressed herself closer against the wall. Crouched down, her left eye strained against the small hole in the wall. She resembled a very naughty peeping Jane.

“Get over here!”

Shauna giggled and quickly clamped her hand over her mouth to suppress the infectious noise. Without hesitation, she tucked a stray hair behind her ear and squatted down beside the sink. She touched Rae gently on the knee and asked, “Where?”

“He’s right there,” Rae whispered back with urgency as she crawled backward to allow Shauna room to enter. “See, he just took off his raincoat!”

“Oh, well, now,” Shauna breathed, “that’s what’s under that nasty bus boy uniform…”

Rae stood up, fluffed her corkscrew circles and stretched her back. “Yummy, isn’t it?”

With his back to the wall, Jose faced his narrow locker in the back of Thelma’s Eatery. He lifted his black cable-knit sweater and slid it up his slightly muscular back and over his head.

“Ah, he’s just taken off his sweater,” Shauna announced dreamily. “You missed it, Rae.”

“What!” Rae raced back to the spot just under the sink and knocked Shauna backward into the sink’s grimy, exposed pipes. “Where?”

Rubbing the injured spot on her head, Shauna ignored her. Like a nimble cat, she climbed out from underneath the sink and brushed off the cobwebs and dust. She crawled over to Rae’s left side, careful not to disturb the scene.

“Damn. But I didn’t miss him taking off…” Rae fell silent.

Shauna guessed Jose had taken off his pants. It was the only thing that could have rendered Rae speechless. She giggled quietly again. For the last two weeks, she and Rae had been sneaking a peek at Jose as he changed from his regular clothes to his Thelma’s uniform.

“What are you two doing?” called a voice from the women’s restroom entranceway.

Spooked, both Rae and Shauna jumped at the sound and nearly head butted each other as they scrambled to their feet.

Laughing, Kim pointed at their soiled knees and near collision. After she’d gotten a breath said, “I guess Jose’s here today.”

“Very funny,” Rae said with a smirk, her light green eyes narrowing to annoyed slits. “You nearly frightened me to death.”

“You deserve it! Peeping on Jose. Shame on you!” Kim wiggled her finger at them. “How would you feel if he did that to you?”

“I can’t speak for Shauna, but I know I’d love it!” Rae shot back.

“Rae!” Kim shouted in shock.

Rae rolled her eyes in mock disgust. “It’s time to get to work, anyway.”

Rae leaned down, dusted the crud from her stockings and walked out of the restroom. Shauna quickly combed her hair. “She’ll get over it.”

“I know,” Kim replied. “So, what did our resident GQ model wear today? His usual stripped shirt and black polyester pants?”

“Black sweater, blue jeans, you know the fitted ones that show off his…well, you know. That sweater makes his dark eyes seem so much brighter against that tanned Latino skin!” Shauna commented as she slipped her comb into her pocket.

“I still don’t see what you guys see in him. He’s a busboy, for crying out loud! Cute, but still bussing tables.” Kim hurried into one of the vacant stalls. “Hiding out in a toilet area!”

Shauna pulled her lipstick pencil from her pants’ pocket and concentrated on tracing her full lips. “But, Kim, you’ve never seen him naked.” The line had to be just right, or her oval mouth would seem too large.

The flush of the toilet temporarily called a truce to the conversation. Within seconds, Kim emerged from the stall and washed her hands under the sink’s frigid cold water. “Technically, neither have you.”

Shauna giggled. “Who cares if he’s a busboy? It’s not like you’re going to marry him. We’re only watching. Totally innocent.”

Kim snickered. “Innocent, sure.”

Shauna and Kim fell quiet for a moment before they burst into laughter as they left the restroom. Nothing involving Rae was ever innocent.

When they emerged from the restroom into the tiny hallway leading back to the seating areas, Jose came out of the men’s locker room dressed in his Thelma’s uniform.

Kim and Shauna exchanged glances. They burst into laughter as Jose passed by, now fully dressed in his polyester black pants and striped shirt.

Jose stopped and glanced around. He opened his mouth to say something, but quickly shut it.

Kim struggled to keep a straight face while Shauna gave up and walked away, still laughing.

“Nothing. Private joke,” Kim managed to mumble after him, before surrendering to a full fit of laughter. Their GQ model, dressed in discount store clothes was just funny to her.

Jose gave her a weird look, mumbled something in Spanish and headed toward the kitchen.

Kim shook her head at the ridiculousness of finding both Shauna and Rae under a sink in the women’s restroom, peeping on Jose. She walked past the bar and seating areas and back to the entrance marked kitchen.

In five minutes, the early lunch crowd would arrive at Thelma’s for some good ol’ soul food. Kim checked her order pad to make sure she had enough for the night and struggled to retie her apron behind her.

“I’ll get it,” Rae said from behind her. “Shauna said you get section A tonight.”

Kim secretly groaned. Section A was comprised of mostly tables, and a few booths. Most people liked sitting in booths, and the A section almost never became full. Section A was also the farthest away from the front door. Customers hated walking all the way to the rear of the restaurant. Tips would be lousy.

“I get Section C,” Rae said with pride. “There, all done.” She finished tying Kim’s apron strings.

Section C was along the left wall, where windows overlooked the lake. It also included a mixture of tables and booths, but Section C was the most requested. People liked the view of the small manmade lake.

“Tonya gets B Section,” Rae said as she patted Kim on the shoulder. Kim turned to face Rae. “You came all the way over here just to brag, didn’t you?”

Rae’s light green eyes flickered, and Kim was sure she was going to get an argument, but Rae said, “No, I came over here to help you tie your apron.”

Rae snorted and unbuttoned the first three buttons on her shirt, revealing a plump, smooth brown cleavage and a pearl necklace that had a faint line running across the beige string.

Probably fake, Kim thought of both the necklace and the cleavage.

Rae walked away, sashaying the entire length of the kitchen until she reached the entrance, where she disappeared into the seating area.

Was it her imagination, or did Rae hike her skirt up to miniskirt level, Kim wondered as she adjusted her own knee length skirt. The sheer black stockings, miniskirt, and white short-sleeved shirt were the color scheme for a French maid’s uniform.

Kim took a deep breath and decided she’d better get to Section A and get to work. She glanced at her watch…eleven o’clock on the nose.

Reviews For THELMA'S EATERY by RaeLynn Blue

"...One aspect of Thelma’s Eatery that is spectacular is the multiculturalism. Despite, the excess of characters, no two are the same. In a world where most novels are all black or white, it was a pleasure to see something different. I commend RaeLynn Blue."

Suni Farrar 3/4 Stars, Just Erotic Romance Review, Heat Level: S

"A Multicultural mixture blending the realistic everyday lives of young men and women working in what could be an 'eatery next door'. They share lustful thoughts and hide their dreams for the future. I promote this as a excellent read, filled with a twist that will surprise you, and the heat in the kitchen is more than just the oven."

Road to Romance
"Ms. Blue has written a delightful story with a cast of characters as intriguing as those in Peyton Place and a setting reminding everyone of their favorite grandmothers home cooking...Besides the liveliness of all the characters, Ms. Blue has truly captured the warmth of Southerners. This book is a delight and I look forward to reading more books by Ms. Blue."

TCM Reviews
"For such a short read I felt that the character development was exceptional. The story pace was at a good flow and all the various parts of the story fit well together...While the sexual exploits of the characters begin later on in the story, one has to agree that RaeLynn Blue is a master of words. Her detail telling is commendable as the sex scenes are quite hot and steamy."

4 Stars:
I enjoyed the way the author wove together the separate stories of Kim, Rae and Shauna and managed to have an interesting plot beyond the sex. The writing was good and the characters believable. ~Glenda's Reviews & More
