Paige repeated the mantra in her head one more time, hoping maybe this would be the time it really, truly sank in. Still, she was quite sure that when her parents told her she could be anything she wanted when she grew up, they hadn’t meant that. No, Paige was sure she had done her parents proud when it came to picking out a career. It had taken many long years of late nights and early mornings, but she had succeeded in becoming a veterinarian, bringing the thriving metropolis of Thelma its first clinic. Now, if only she could bring that kind of success to her love life, she’d be truly happy. But Paige figured, as she threw the last crumpled Kleenex from her travel box onto the seat next to the rest of the tear-soaked ones, she would take the weekend to reevaluate her life and find a way to get right back into the dating game. She was a Taylor, and that’s what Taylors did. Besides, her parents had backed out of the holiday weekend plans they had at their vacation home just north of town, so she would have all the peace and solitude she needed. Paige could sleep in until noon, drink coffee with lunch, and watch all the rented movies she could possibly imagine, all in the comfort of her pajamas. She turned down the old dirt road toward the secluded A-frame, feeling mildly better already. The fresh air of the country would help patch the holes in her self-confidence, or at least put her very temperamental emotions back in place. As she neared the cabin, though, Paige noticed a black Mustang already parked in front of it. A surprisingly familiar car that shouldn’t be anywhere within thirty miles of this place. Letting her eyes follow the natural path up toward the building’s front door, Paige cursed under her breath when she saw Riley leaning smoothly up against the frame like it was created for the weight of his body. What in the hell was he doing here anyway? Putting the car in park, she took a few deep breaths to calm herself down as he made his way toward her car door. The closer he got, the shallower her breathing became. Oh crap, oh crap, oh crap. She didn’t have to turn her head to know he had stuck his through her open window. Paige would have been able to identify Riley Hamden out of a line-up blindfolded, just based on smell. Her stuffy, crybaby nose couldn’t stop the sexy, almost spicy smell of his cologne. She almost sighed. Until her anger took over. “I wasn’t expecting company this weekend, Riley. Nor do I want any.” She brushed her fingers through her uncombed hair and waited while he opened her door for her. Riley always did things like that. Things he thought were charming. Right now, Paige was two seconds away from telling him what she really thought about his little act. She hadn’t dressed for company, hadn’t even brushed her hair. She looked like death, and no amount of repeating that she was beautiful and sexy was going to help her in this situation. In fact, it only made her madder. “Relax, sweetheart. Your folks called and said they were worried about you. Something about a bad week, and asked if I’d come keep you company.” “And you were just so eager to jump in and be the boy scout, weren’t you?” Paige let out a groan and moved around him to grab her bag out of the trunk. So much for putting my life back together. “Well, from the looks of the Kleenex on the front seat, Paige, I can’t say your parents are too far off.” She dragged her bag to the front door and dug out the key. “Can’t say that it’s any of your business, Riley. Why don’t you run home and tell my folks I’m an adult who can take care of herself, ’kay?” Letting herself in the cottage, she was assaulted by the closed-up smell of the place. Immediately, she moved toward the windows to let in some fresh summer air. “How about you let me stay at least long enough to make you dinner?” Paige leaned her head up against the side of the cool wall and exhaled slowly. What she really wanted was to be alone. To sit with no other noise than the local wildlife and let it cleanse her crummy soul. Under no circumstances did she want to be in the company of another human being, let alone a man. And certainly not one who could make her forget everything else but him. “I brought groceries with me, and I make a to-die-for spaghetti.” Who didn’t know how to make good spaghetti? She let her shoulders sink as she practically fell into one of the overstuffed chairs. She knew better than to argue with a lawyer. “Fine. Dinner and that’s it. Got it, Riley? I came here to be alone and I plan to.” Riley’s smile awakened something deep inside her. It was something that had always unnerved her about him. When Riley smiled at Paige, she felt as if it was meant only for her. That she was the only person to ever get that particular look out of him. The smile that all but screamed I want you, Paige Marie Taylor. She massaged her forehead with her fingers and hoped Riley would disappear. It was ridiculous of her even to think like that. She wasn’t a beautiful, attractive woman who Riley would be interested in. Hadn’t she just learned that lesson with Josh’s parting words? And yet, as she looked up at Riley again, who stood across the room watching her with a strange light in his eyes, Paige couldn’t help but think it. Riley began moving toward her and Paige could feel her heart start beating a little harder in her chest. Was it even possible? He stopped in front of her and his fingers reached out to grasp hers. The heat of his hand on hers wasn’t what startled her. It was the electricity that began flowing throughout her body from the touch. Just a simple touch and she was coming alive in places better left dead. Maybe she should tell him to leave right now. “It’s too early for dinner yet. Let’s go for a walk. It’ll help. Trust me.” She didn’t want to go out. Paige didn’t want to believe him that anything would help. Simply stated, she wanted to curl up in a ball and forget her recent months of relationship misery. But evidently, that wasn’t an option as Riley tugged on her hand and pulled her into a standing position next to him. Immediately, she broke the intimate contact. Coming off a bad breakup was not the time to start wondering what all these little sparks and tingles really meant. It was the time to be alone. “I’d rather not, Riley. Couldn’t you just leave?” Riley hooked his arm underneath hers and started leading her toward the door. “Not until I’m certain you’re not going to do anything drastic. Come on, it’s a beautiful summer day.” Grudgingly, Paige let Riley move her toward the outdoors. Reviews For TORRID TEASERS Volume 10 by Emma Sinclair & Kristina Diesen Ecataromance
